Intermittent Fasting

Today I've decided to start intentional intermittent fasting, by... not skipping, but delaying breakfast. This is a cognitively dissonant (counter intuitive) behavior for me because I believe, still, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and even as I write this I realize that it's true, and I will simply break my fast a couple of hours later.

Since working days two and a half years ago I've gotten into the practice of waking at 0400, exercising and having a cup of tea after the workout. At 0610 or there-abouts I'm eating a meal, usually something substantial; some soup, or lentils, egg with cheese. My last meal of the day is near and usually before 2000 hours (8pm). I hit the rack by 2200. By the time I wake I've been fasting for 8 hours. The way the metabolism works, so I have learned; it goes after blood sugar first (for fuel) then muscle glucose and finally fat stores... after 8 hours, which is right on schedule. According to this, and I'll call it a theory, my 4am workout should be consuming fat stores.
May 4th, 2016 - May the 4th be with you........

I'd say, probably so... because a few snapshots last night seem to suggest a fat shredding is occurring all over the body, and is also noticeable on the torso.

On days off I sleep longer and eat later. According to my charts, those are the days I drop 2 - 3 lbs and have the best muscle weight to body fat ratios. This suggests that I can actually delay breaking fast for a few hours... at least until I get to the gig... (0700). The energy I use to get to the gig; the walk to the train station, the climb up the stairs and finally to the gig, will be consuming fat stores, (unless it goes after the [raw] sugar I put in my tea).

I probably don't have to do this every day, however, the body will probably adapt to it and start expecting to eat fat in the morning. It's worth an experiment. There have been times in my life that I skipped... I mean, delayed, breakfast with no ill effects. Furthermore, these days my diet is much, much different; there's no roller-coaster carb ride from eating donuts, bread/wheat and general "junk" foods. I can pack a raw meal to eat at the gig... (to avoid having to use the microwave) and keep the day moving.

I will certainly get back to you on this one.... it may even be necessary to update this entry over the course of the day.

Let's go!!

Update 1400 Today...

Managed to make it until 0800 before eating. I then devoured my cabbage guacamole with cheese, popped my supplements and finished off the trail mix before lunch. Lunch was 80% of a pound of turkey, cabbage, avocados,  and cherry tomatoes - which is about the usual... this was at noon. I ate only half of it.. as of now... and will probably keep it in the fridge until I come in tomorrow. I may repeat this pattern to see if I can manage two days straight Three weeks to make a habit. Also the Bod usually responds and adapts within three weeks. So we'll see how both go... my imagination-power, my discipline and the Bod. Should be interesting.

People who have posted have commented on how good they feel, energetic and not hungry. The less food I eat the less the metabolism has to work on breaking it down and the more energy I have for other activities, such as going to the Y today. Okay.. time to wrap things up here. This may be the final update for today. I might add a pic or two.

Update 1905 Today..

At home sipping some tea after the protein shake and supplements, after riding home from the Y, after a body weight training killer workout. I am finding that BWT is so much tougher, yet I feel like I am doing so much less. Because I can only hold my body in such a position for so long, I am doing a lot fewer reps; ten is almost unheard of for me at this point. Anyway, I was at the Y for just over an hour. Felt energized when I was done. Had some dried seaweed on the way home, then had the shake. Now, I'm feeling the metabolism steal my energy in order to digest the protein, I suppose. I should have a bowl of soup before 2000 and a small bowl of soup, then repeat the process to see how it goes. More details at the website linked above.

Ciao.
